Piece of My Heart

Television (Excerpts) – 2009

Piece of My Heart was a passion project for writer/director Fiona Samuels. After taking ten years to get funding, it attracted a stellar cast (including Keisha Castle-Hughes and Emily Barclay, who both won awards). Adapted from Renee's 1995 novel Does This Make Sense to You?, the TV movie lays bare the pain caused by forced adoptions inflicted on unwed and teenage mothers in 1950s and 60s Aotearoa. In this opening excerpt, Flora (Annie Whittle) gets a letter that breaks her heart. She heads to Dunedin to find refuge with Kat (Rena Owen) a face from her past who knows exactly what Flora is going through.
