Celebrating the “transformative power of dance”, Dancing in the Dark centres on Peter Vosper, an inventor who has designed his own custom light suit as an outlet for his creativity. It also makes the perfect addition to No Lights No Lycra, an event where participants spend an hour dancing to upbeat music in the dark. While most dancers can’t be seen (as is the appeal of the event — dance like no one’s watching), Peter’s glowing suit takes centre stage and makes for quite the spectacle. The film is part of the Loading Docs series of shorts, made for exhibition online.

Genesis Potini has a bi-polar disorder; his nephew Mana (Boy’s James Rolleston) faces being pressed into a gang. A near unrecognisable Cliff Curtis won international acclaim as Potini. James Napier Robertson's acclaimed second feature was picked to opened the 2014 Auckland and Wellington Film Festival, and scored six Moa awards, including Best Picture, Director, Actor and Supporting Actor.
This documentary follows the police investigation that lead to the capture and imprisonment of South Auckland rapist Joseph Thompson. He was the first serial rapist convicted in New Zealand. Using re-enactments and in depth interviews with police, the Keith Hunter-directed doco examines how the relatively new technology of DNA matching and criminal profiling led to the arrest of Thompson in 1995. Viewers are not spared details of his long-lasting and brutal rampage which targeted girls as young as 10. Thompson was eventually sentenced to over 30 years in prison.
This Inside New Zealand doco takes a calm, no nonsense look at one man’s encounter with heroin addiction — a habit he estimates cost him a seven figure sum. Far from being the clichéd junkie loser, Tim was a husband, father and successful businessman who remarkably didn’t think twice about dabbling with a drug that had already taken the life of one of his sisters. Nine years after it led him to detox and rehab, Tim and his mother and sister talk about his addiction and its impact on their lives — without glamorising or demonising the drug or its users.
Directed by Owen Hughes, this piece for arts show Artsville explores the feeling of being caught between cultures. Painter Prakash Patel grew up as an Indian in conservative 1970s Wanganui. As a Kiwi he didn’t feel Indian yet he didn’t belong in Wanganui either - ‘What am I doing here?’ In 2006 he was awarded a Creative New Zealand Residency at the Sanskriti Campus in New Delhi. Out of Darkness, Out of India follows Prakash on his journey from discomfort to discovery.
Mesmerizing electron micrography featuring the infinitesimal workings of a time piece adds appreciable value to the remix of this mid 90s track. Sparing use of colour, and the inaudible rantings of a semi-clad man serve to compound the complexity and appeal of this slightly disconcerting clip.
Formed in 1993 by Jody Lloyd and Eli Foley, Christchurch hip hop group Dark Tower were notable for rapping in New Zealand accents, and sampling NZ TV and folk music: a kiwiana point of difference to the ‘urban pasifika’ dominant influence in local hip hop. Listener critic Nick Bollinger wrote, "Dark Tower are on a mission to remind us who we are". 2001 LP Canterbury Drafts was nominated for NZ hip hop album of the year; their biggest hit was 2000 single 'Baggy Trousers', which spawned a cult Blair Witch inspired video. Lloyd also works under the moniker Trillion.
Award-winning editor Peter Roberts runs post production company RPM Pictures, and has worked on a wide range of TV shows and films. His TV credits include Gloss, God, Sreenu and Me, Legend of the Seeker and Artsville. His film work includes The Dark Horse, Hip Hop-eration, The Most Fun You Can Have Dying and 50 Ways of Saying Fabulous.
James Napier Robertson began his career as an actor in the teen shows Being Eve and The Tribe. Finding acting unfulfilling, he moved into writing and directing with the short film Foul Play, before forming a production company with business partner Tom Hern. Since then Napier Robertson has directed two features: I’m Not Harry Jenson and The Dark Horse.

Many of the titles were made by powerhouse company NHNZ, which began around 1977 as the Natural History Unit, a small, southern outpost of state television.
