Directed by veteran producer Owen Hughes, this piece for arts show Artsville is narrated by Kiwi Indian artist Prakash Patel who explores his discomfort and creativity that comes from being in two worlds. Patel grew up in an immigrant family in conservative 1970s Wanganui, not feeling Indian yet not belonging in Wanganui either. In 2006 he was awarded a Creative New Zealand Residency at the Sanskriti Campus in New Delhi. Out of Darkness, Out of India traces Prakash's journey back to his parents' country. At first he is overwhelmed before opening up to Indians' innate "love of life".
When they mix with artists from all over the world, straight away they share together. Something happens to the place itself and their ideas and their sharing also get mixed with the soil of this place. Therefore there is a certain kind of smell or some kind of beautiful fragrance. The fragrance of their creativity you can see all around.– OP Jain, founder of the Sanskriti Foundation
